Doubling before -ing and -ed

Stop → stopping

Short vowel + one consonant: double it.

The bus is stopping at Kochi.

Run → running

Same pattern: run, running, runner.

Ananya is running in the relay race.

Visit → visiting

Stress is not on the last syllable: no doubling.

We are visiting our grandparents in Pune.

Remember: One short vowel + one consonant, stressed at the end? Double it (stopping, beginning). Never double w, x, y (snowing, fixing). British English doubles l: travelling.

Short lessonStress & endingsIn longer words, one part is said more strongly. And the ending -ed can be said in three ways.
