Commonly confused words

Some words look or sound alike but do different jobs. A small trick keeps them apart.

1 Observe

Read each pair slowly. What is the one letter or sound that changes?

  • Affect A verb: to change or influence something.
  • Effect A noun: the result of a change.
  • Accept To take or agree to something.
  • Except Leaving out; apart from.

2 Discover

Some word pairs are easy to confuse because they look or sound alike. The fix is a trick: Affect is an Action (both start with A), and the Effect is the End result. Then test the word in your sentence.
