Gerund is used by children. This explains what we hold, why, and what you can ask us to do about it — in plain English.

The short version

  • We hold as little as we can and never sell any of it.
  • We show no advertising to anyone, and never will to a child.
  • We do not record what pages a child visits.
  • A child's PIN is theirs. Nobody can read it — not their parent, not their teacher, not us.
  • You can ask us to delete everything, and we will.

Who is responsible

Gerund is run by Haigreeva Kondury, in Bengaluru, India. Under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 we are the Data Fiduciary for the information described here. Questions and requests go to hello@gerund.in, and we answer within seven days.

What we hold about a child

Their first nameSo a teacher and parent can tell one student from another
A registration number we issueHow they sign in. It is not an email address and is not shared
Their PIN, stored scrambledSo we can check it without ever being able to read it
Which questions they answered, and whether each was rightTo show what they have learnt and what to practise
Last name, school, town — only if a parent gives themSo a teacher can match work to the right board and year
Board and class, if a parent sets themTo order the syllabus correctly

We ask for no email address, no phone number, no photograph and no address for a child. Every optional field can be left empty or cleared later, and clearing is as easy as filling it in.

Things we deliberately do not do

The law is strict about children, and so are we. We do not track or monitor what a child browses. We do not build a profile of a child. We show no advertising and run no recommendation engine over a child's behaviour. We do not use children's answers to train AI models.

Our own traffic statistics deliberately exclude every request made by a signed-in student, so a child's activity is not in them at all.

Consent, and who gives it

A child's account is created either by their teacher or by their parent. Where a teacher creates it, the parent links to it using a code the teacher gives them — that link is the parent confirming they are the guardian and agree to us holding their child's information.

Details beyond a first name — last name, school, town, board — can only be entered by a linked parent. A child cannot enter them and is never asked to.

Who can see what

  • The child sees their own work.
  • A linked parent sees progress, class test results and what the class is covering. They do not see every question or every attempt — outcomes, never keystrokes.
  • Their teacher sees progress for students in their own classes, and the details a parent has supplied.
  • Nobody else. We do not sell, rent or share personal data. No advertising network receives anything.

How we know Gerund is being used

When you open Gerund while signed in with an adult account (one with an email address), on the website or in our app from Google Play, we note when you first and last opened it and how many times, so we know which parts of Gerund people use. We do not record what you do inside it, and we never record this for a child's account. If you open the app without signing in, we only count that it was opened, with no name or identifier. This record is deleted with your account.

Word Explorer

Word Explorer (gerund.in/words) is free and open to everyone, with or without an account. It does not record who visits, what anyone searches for, or how anyone answers the practice questions: answers are checked on your own device, and the "Create" box is never saved or sent anywhere.

Certificates and "Show us your English"

Learners receive certificates for finishing units and modules, and their teacher or the Gerund team may give a monthly recognition. A certificate shows the learner's name, what it is for, the date and who gave it. It never shows marks, rank, school, class or a photo. Certificates are private to the learner and, for a child, their linked parent, until they choose to share one. Each month a student may also share one piece of writing with the Gerund team. Only the Gerund team reads it; it is kept for about three months and then deleted. Certificates and shared pieces are deleted with the account.

The AI tutor

Gerund includes an English tutor called LIY. Questions asked of it are sent to Anthropic's Claude to generate a reply, and are stored so we can check the feature is being used safely and as intended. LIY answers only English questions. Conversations are not used to train any AI model.

Where it is kept, and for how long

Data is held in MongoDB Atlas in Mumbai, India, and the server runs on Railway in Singapore. Traffic statistics delete themselves after 90 days. Whiteboard rooms delete themselves after 30 days. Everything else is kept while the account is in use, and deleted when you ask.

What you can ask us to do

You may ask what we hold about your child, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete all of it, or withdraw your consent — which means the account is removed. Email hello@gerund.in. We reply within seven days. How to ask for deletion, and what is deleted, is set out on Delete your account.

If you are not satisfied with how we handle a request, you may complain to the Data Protection Board of India.

If something goes wrong

If personal data is exposed, we will tell affected parents and the Data Protection Board without delay, say plainly what happened, and say what we are doing about it.
